Charles E. Smith Center – Washington, DC
christopher consutlants worked with Gensler to provide civil engineering services for the Charles E. Smith Center at George Washington University (GWU). Services provided by christopher include construction administration, LEED analysis, schematic design and site planning. christopher also provided evaluation of the existing infrastructure and ADA compliance assistance.
The Charles E. Smith Center project, started in 2008, included a three-year renovation stimulated by a $10 million donation from the Robert H. Smith Family Foundation. The Smith Center originally opened in 1975 and houses GWU’s Department of Athletics and Recreation. The Smith Center hosts GWU’s NCAA Division I games, as well as entertainment and academic events. The renovation, completed in 2011, included a transformation of the exterior of the building to glass and metal, renovations to the lobby, creation of additional locker room space, a new box office and improvements to the two auxiliary gyms. A new concession area was also added and features new refreshment options and upgraded bathrooms. The Smith Center was awarded a LEED Gold Certification for practices such as sustainability in construction, energy efficiency and use of low volatile organic compounds.
